It is with very heavy hearts that Bridges will say goodbye to its much beloved cedar tree next week. Following a diagnosis of Phaeolus Schweinitzii which is a common problem with cedars, we have been left with no option but to fell this beautiful local landmark. We know everyone will be as sad as us to see this happen but we have consulted many experts on ways in which it could be saved or retained but to no avail. Everyone was agreed that due to worries about the safety of the public, no other solution can be found. It is generally agreed that this tree is around 250 years old which is the average life expectancy of this species. The tree was previously subject to a Tree Preservation Order but this problem is so severe this has been lifted.

There will inevitably be some local disruption whilst the works are carried out on Monday 28th February and Tuesday 1st March – please check www.monmouhshirebeacon.co.uk for any possible road closures

Happily there are plans to replace the tree with other saplings in the grounds and there is also the possibility of something quite exciting happening with any remaining timber so do watch this space.

If you have lovely memories of the tree, for example, getting engaged beneath it or if it features in any treasured photographs, do please share them with us as we’d love to memorialise it in some way. If you have any questions or would like to share your memories, please contact aileen.atkinson@bridgescentre.org.uk
